August is generally considered the worse time for a comedian to make a living. used to be that the hot weather made damn sure all the gigs would enter hibernation. But these days there ‘s work there if you can find it. which is good because the alternative is hell: go to the Edinbro Fringe. Noooooooooo!!! But boy has it been hot , the last few weeks have had a few insufferable days where all one could do was lie low. Eleri went to France for a week, during the sweltering heat. Her cousin’s son’s wedding.
I have picked up a few clubs, a few festivals, a few welsh gigs. Did a semi improvised gig in the Steddfod in Tregaron, i am after all the Samariad Tregaron. Won the improvised stand up comedy competition in Cafe Maes B. (see more in the Cymraeg section of this website).
Then in the evening i did my one man show in the Riverside Cafe. it was tremendous success. $0 punters came to this welsh language show. I did most of material, some new stuff, as well as all my welsh songs. In the middle of a routine about north walian pub drinkers speaking welsh i mention Schrodinger’s cat – just as i said that a cat appeared at the door of the club….unbelievable…i let it it in and stroked it, and put it on the chair so everyone could see it and gasp at the strange coincidence. what a miracle.
Did a lovely gig in Bicester – outdoors. did a couple of gigs for Windsor – one of them was outdoors, did a couple of gigs for Rob Riley. Was offered a cruise, and damn i would have taken it if i didn t have to cancel stuff.
One of windsor’s gigs was near Horsham….southwater. it was one of two gigs the other being in Horley. it’s horrible having to drive these distances in the sweltering heat. No air con in my old Astra so the windows are down all the way – which of course precludes me from listening to the cd player 😦 – alone with my mixed up thoughts…
I experienced a few coincidences since the start of August but i’m buggered if i can recall them now. i do recall the really hot days. an man in his 80s was out walking in the oppressive heat. He went past the house so i invited him for a sit down and a glass of water. in the night i went for a stroll, and the moon was a half moon, like a giant yin yang circle suspended above the valley.
did a gig in Kidwelly. had a fear that it was going to be terrible and almost turned back. but u know the imagination plays tricks when fear gets involved with it. The gig was great fun. Kidwelly rugby club.
